Purpose of the Conference
The National Postgraduate Conference in Ecology, Evolution and Systematics will provide an opportunity for postgraduate and honours students at any stage in their research to present and discuss their work. Students of any discipline researching aspects of ecology, evolution or systematics are encouraged to attend.
Students will gain valuable experience in presenting scientific research to an audience of peers. The conference has been structured to provide a generous amount of time for informal discussion in order to encourage the development of a network of contacts between graduate students and the sharing of scientific ideas and academic concerns. Those planning to present their work at other conferences will find this an excellent opportunity to practice in a supportive environment.

Structure of the Event
Talks will conform to customary conference format: 12 min plus 3 min for questions. The two best presentations will receive an award, consisting of a cash prize of $100 plus a certificate. Thursday and Friday will be dedicated to student talks during the day and poster sessions in the afternoon. Between sessions there will be extended tea and coffee breaks to encourage discussion. In addition to talks there will be two special presentations on tips for writing successful grant applications and how to optimise your oral presentation skills. For informal discussion there will be barbeques on both Thursday and Friday evenings. On Saturday morning an optional field trip will take place to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve where there are several beautiful bush walks. We also hope to hold a behind the scenes tour of the conservation work being carried out at Tidbinbilla.
Venue
The conference will be held on the Australian National University campus in Canberra. Presentations will take place in the new seminar room at the Division of Botany and Zoology. All modern audio-visual aids will be available. The campus accommodation is across the road from the lecture facility and the Student Union is within five minutes walk. The Student union has many inexpensive eating options as well as a small grocery, post office and book store (not to mention a lively bar). Canberra's civic area is also only 15 min walk away for an additional range of restaurants, bars and entertainment.
