Olivine

olivine

This figure shows a BSE image of olivine grains (intermediate gray-scales) and interstitial basaltic melt (white). Cracks (black) are due to rapid decompression of the sample during quench from high pressure and temperature conditions. The different gray-scales of the olivine grains are not due to compositional variations, but different crystallographic orientations of the grains in the plane of the section.
