Telnet instructions
This is the documentation to get you started using the Telnet application
to access the UNIX systems.
Connecting
On Macs the application is in the communications folder (ITS area) or the Summer
School folder.
- Double click on the icon to launch it.
- Select "Open Connection..." from the "File" menu.
- Enter the machine name in the Host/Session name box, e.g. rsphy8
- Click "Connect"
- Enter your username at the "login:" prompt, e.g. cms106
- Enter your password.
- Wait for the ">" UNIX prompt.
- To logout enter "logout"
Notes: To use the control-C and control-S key combinations select the
"Setup Keys..." option of the "Session" menu and delete those entries.
Transferring files
To transfer files from the UNIX machine to your local machine:
- Change to the directory you want to send from with the "cd" command;
e.g. "cd proj2_dir".
- Select "Send FTP command" from the "Network" Menu.
- At the "ftp>" prompt type "send proj2.for" to transfer file "proj.for"
- Type "quit" to return to the UNIX prompt.
