Pissarro: The First Impressionist Conference

Conference Report

Dates

Saturday 19 November 2005

Venue

Art Gallery of NSW

Conveners

Mr Terence Maloon AGNSW and Dr Caroline Turner, HRC, ANU

In 1984 the HRC theme was 'Landscape and the Arts', confronting the relationships between ideal and real landscapes and the role of landscapes in a culture's projection of itself. Twenty years later as part of our broad treatment of the theme “Cultural Landscapes” we will reassess approaches to representation of landscape in the arts. As one project a conference with the Art Gallery of NSW in November 2005 will explore FRENCH IMPRESSIONISM and in particular the landscapes and cityscapes of Camille Pissarro and his experiments with pictorial composition in the context of the contemporary ideas surrounding Impressionism and neo-Impressionism.
