Short Courses and WorkshopsIn each year the HRC runs a number of Conferences, Symposia and Workshops on a range of themes including some intended specifically for graduate students. In previous years these have covered such topics as the ‘The Bio-philosophy and Politics of Life’ and ‘Britishness and Otherness’, and ‘Museums and the Public Sphere’. In 2005 there was a graduate workshops on ‘Re-enactment and Extreme History-Canberra’ and ‘Re-enactment and Extreme History-Melbourne’. In addition to the Annual first year student conference the HRC intermittently runs ‘in-house’ conferences for later students to present papers in a more structured environment. The HRC runs a work-in-progress (WIP) seminar each Tuesday afternoon at 4.00pm for visiting fellows and academic staff. Later year students who wish to present their work in this forum should contact the WIPS program coordinator, Dr Alastair MacLachlan. Later year students also participate in the intensive Thesis Writing Workshop that is run jointly with the CCR. Meeting on a fortnightly basis the Writing Workshop provides students with critical commentary and peer review in a challenging but supportive environment. The Writing Workshop is convened by Dr Paul Pickering. Students are encouraged to participate in ALL HRC Conferences, Symposia and Workshops.
