HRC Research Theme 2004

"Asia-Pacific"

In developing projects which address and interrogate this theme the HRC is working with scholars throughout Australia and internationally, and especially drawing on the enormous strengths of Asian and Pacific scholarship at the Australian National University through the National Institute of Asia and the Pacific at the ANU, to shape projects and conferences which cross disciplinary boundaries, in particular with the social sciences and creative arts, and which address broad but vitally important issues related to culture and society. We are also collaborating on this theme with our colleagues in the National Institute of the Humanities and the National Institute of the Arts at ANU. The HRC is working on a number of projects with other Australian Universities and National Cultural Institutions, including the National Museum and the National Library of Australia.

Special emphasis is being given to the processes of dynamic change underway in the region and therefore to new ways of perceiving national and cultural identities, to the role of museums as cultural heritage institutions, to intangible as well as tangible heritage in the region, and to Australia’s engagement with Asia since the Vietnam war.  Some projects link Asia and the Pacific with Europe: for example Dr Robert Cribb’s colloquium on “Lies, Conspiracy and Propaganda” and the XII David Nichol  Smith Conference in Eighteenth Century Studies. The HRC is also working with the National Gallery of Australia on a project and conference “The Edwardians” which coincides with an exhibition of that name featuring British and Australian artists at the National Gallery of Australia, curated by Dr Anna Gray Head of Australian Art. HRC staff are contributing to a major historical project researching immigration to Australia with the National Museum of Australia.

A number of conferences and events have been confirmed under this theme for 2004.
